What Does Green
Mean? Green can mean many different things
to many different people. For some, it means
simply environmentally friendly, while to others it
means protecting our resources, not only for us, but
for generations to come. The City of Florence
has setup florencegoesgreen.org to show you how you
can do your part, no matter how small.
Some of the greatest
threats to future resources come from things we
throw away every day. Household batteries and
electronics often contain dangerous chemicals that
may leak through the bottom barrier of a landfill
and pollute the groundwater. This can
contaminate everything from the soil where our food
grows, to the water which eventually winds up in our
faucets. Many of these chemicals cannot be
removed from the drinking water or from the crops
that are harvested from contaminated fields.
The risks to human health are tremendous.
Throwing away items
that could be recycled diminishes energy, water and
natural resources that could be saved by recycling.
Does any of this peak your interest? If so,
you've come to the right place. |
